Undergraduates Share Knowledge, Enthusiasm with Middle School Students

Middle school student Dustin Nirschl tries to mop up some oil with an absorbent pad in a classroom simulation.

You could almost hear a pin drop in Rose Grace's seventh-grade classroom. Grace's normally spirited students were each trying to mop up the vegetable oil floating on some water in aluminum pie pans on their desks. A simulation of various methods used to clean up an oil spill in the ocean, the experiment had these middle school students deliberating the pros and cons of skimming, absorbent pads, and dispersion. Moving the Department of Chemical Engineering into the New Millennium

Students in Associate Professor Kristi Anseth's lab work on new biomaterials to repair damage in joints.
For the first time in the history of chemical engineering at CU-Boulder, the Department of Chemical Engineering is launching its own fund-raising campaign. The goal is to raise $11 million over a four-year period in contributions from faculty, alumni, corporate donors, friends of the department, and matching funds programs. The following endowments are already established:

  • Max S. Peters Graduate Fund
  • Ronald E. West Undergraduate Fund
  • Chemical Engineering Excellence Fund
  • Chemical Engineering Laboratory Fund

A number of other endowed chairs and named facility funds are envisioned, which will help the department achieve its goal of becoming a world leader in chemical engineering education during the new millennium.
