Comparison of Tetrahedral and Brick Elements for Elastic Analysis

Comparison of Tetrahedral and Brick Elements for Elastic Analysis

Jochen Carl, Dana Muller-Hoeppe and Morgan Meadows,

The performance of different kinds of elements will be compared using a cantilever beam with a T cross-section and a cubic body. To be tested will be linear and quadratic hexagonal and tetrahedral elements. The functionality will be checked with patch tests. The first model will be a cantilever beam of a T cross-section and will be loaded with a point load vertically at the end, hence pure bending will be taken into consideration. For this problem the Bernoulli beam is supposed to be sufficiently accurate. The second model will be a cube which is also loaded by a nodal vertical load in the center of the top face. The performance of the elements will be evaluated by the displacements, the eigenvalues and the relative error compared to the known analytical solution. Finally distorted elements should be tested and compared to the previously mentioned ones. The necessary code for the computations will be written by us.
