Plant Development and Lignin Biosynthesis

BioServe has established a consortium with the USDA Forest Product Laboratory and several Biotech and Forest Product companies to conduct functional genomic analysis on model plant organisms as well as investigate, discover, and characterize specific genes that regulate the biosynthesis of lignin in trees in response to structural unloading (grown in microgravity).  Recent space flight activities include a payload flown aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during the 9A mission in 2002 (see summary), with plans for conducting additional research aboard ISS.    Contact Dr. Gerard Heyenga for additional information.
