Lecture 7: Sample Containment

Hazard Category           0 - non-toxic: water,

                                                  1 - irritant: salt water, 4<pH<10, alcohol

                                                  2 - critical: pH<4,pH>10, fixative

                                                  3 - catastrophic

Levels of Containment   - redundant design: 'one more' than hazard category

                                                 - adequate factor of safety: only one

Design Examples:

Plant Habitat with water, soil, plants        Hazard Cat. 0: one level of containment

caution: soil particles = eye irritant, may be Cat. 1

Insect Habitat with animals, food             Hazard Cat. 0: one level of containment

Light Source Using Fluorescent Lamp    Hazard Cat. 0 or 2, depending on Mercury content, but:

frangible materials: glass containment: need at least one additional level of containment

Test Tube with bacteria and fixative         Hazard Cat. 2: three levels of containment, but:

may use two levels during observation if containment verifiable and no failure cause
