SUBJECT: Have you noticed the new bike racks around campus?
Parking and Transportation Services, the Environmental Center and Facilities Management partnered to take advantage of the winter break to install bike racks in highly congested areas on campus. With the addition of these 400 stalls, the university has added 1,664 bike parking stalls in the last three years.
18th and Colorado is an area which hosts a particularly high demand for bike parking. Racks were added just north of Ketchum, at the entrance to Muenzinger, west of Environmental Design, west of Imig Music, as well as a pilot area on the inside curve of 18th and Colorado. This pilot area adjusts the drive lanes to create space to add additional racks in the street with bumper blocks and bollards lining the area to protect the cyclists and pedestrians from vehicular traffic.
In addition to this high impact area, needy areas identified by campus staff were also addressed. These areas include:
- North West of Theatre
- South of Hale
- South of Fleming
- West of Wolf Law
- UMC Bike Booth
- West of Koelbel
- East of Engineering
We are hoping these racks will add to the convenience of getting to and from campus, without compromising the safety of others by avoiding locking bikes to handrails and trees. Please keep an eye out for these new racks and take advantage of the multitude of options.
