TO: Boulder Campus Teaching & Research Faculty, Staff,
Deans, Directors, Dept Chairs, System Administration
FROM: IT Security Office
SENDER: Dan Jones, Director of IT Security, University of Colorado Boulder
DATE: April 15, 2011
SUBJECT: Urgent Microsoft Security Update Issued
CU-Boulder faculty, staff and students are urged to download the latest
security update from Microsoft resolving a vulnerability which could allow a
malicious user to compromise Microsoft Windows desktops and servers that have
Windows file and printer sharing enabled.
Consistent with Microsoft's recommendations, the IT Security Office is requesting
that the campus apply the security update as soon as possible. To run the update,
confirm it has been applied, or for more information, visit
Individuals working in a managed environment should work closely with the IT
department and/or Computer Support Representatives (CSRs). To locate your computer
Support Representative (CSR) visit http://www.colorado.edu/its/tier2/lookup.html.
Through next week, the IT Security Office will scan the network to identify
vulnerable systems. If there are indications that the vulnerability is being
exploited, the IT Security Office will contact departmental IT staff and/or
individual system owners. If the vulnerable system is compromising the campus
network, it will be quarantined. This is a critical time of year, and we will
be working closely with any departments that may be affected.
The IT Security Office classified this particular vulnerability as "urgent"
which is the most severe of our categories and for which we usually alert the
campus community in order to take swift action. The scanning completed by IT
security will not access data on individual systems and efforts are made to not
impact campus systems.
If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Center at 303-735-4357
(or 5-HELP from an on-campus phone) or firstname.lastname@example.org. Phone help is
available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
