    LEAP Presents:

"We Have To Talk: Effectively Managing Difficult Conversation"

As Faculty Ombudspersons Lee Potts and Larry Singell have observed that
difficult problems with students, colleagues or chairs /administrators can
be exacerbated, or even get out of hand, when the faculty member faced with
such a problem does not carefully prepare for the conversation s/he hopes
    will resolve the problem.

On October 12 from 12:30-1:45 in Regent 302, Larry and Lee will present a
LEAP workshop on how to prepare for such difficult conversations. The
workshop will focus on strategies and skills that research demonstrates will
both enhance success (in terms of one's goals) and maintain relationships.
Faculty and Instructors are invited to attend this workshop and are
encouraged to come with an example of such a difficult conversation with a
student, colleague or administrator (keeping that person's identity
confidential, of course). The goal of the workshop is an interactive problem
solving session where the strategies and skills identified can be applied to
the issues attendees contribute. The collective experience of the
participants will provide valuable and practical insights to inform the
discussion. Please join us and share your experiences; sharing insights can
make us all more effective. Come and meet other faculty members, enjoy a
lunch, and find support to enhance your communication skills.

Larry Singell and Lee Potts are Faculty Ombuds here on the Boulder campus.
Together they have 80 years of faculty experience from assistant professors
to Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor. They offer both wisdom and
perspective as they work with faculty, staff and students here on campus. We
are fortunate to have this resource at CU Boulder.

Please RSVP to Carole.Capsalis@colorado.edu byThursday, October 7 if you
would like to attend this event. Space is limited, first come-first served.
