SUBJECT: Albert E. Smith Funds for Social Science Research
** Funding is restricted to tenure track faculty in the the college of Arts
and Sciences Social Sciences departments.
The Albert E. Smith Fund is providing funds to support innovative social
science research on issues associated with human survival in a nuclear age.
CARTSS seeks to bring together social science researchers to address
"Sustainability, Security, and Survival in a New Nuclear Age." This could
include a broad range of questions associated with a new generation of
nuclear energy, e.g. risk and uncertainty, collaborative policymaking,
communicating to publics and policymakers, energy security policy, social
movements supporting peaceful alternatives, sustainable development, framing
strategies, environmental tradeoffs, and other salient concerns. Two
competitive grant programs are open for applications; applications for the
Albert E. Smith Funds are due March 3, 2010. See previous awardees at:
http://cartss.colorado.edu/ .
Albert E. Smith Emerging Scholars: Up to three $2000 competitive grants will
be awarded for social science graduate student research projects addressing
issues related to this broad theme.
Albert E. Smith Scholars: Up to two $5000 competitive grants to support
social science tenure-track faculty research on issues related to this broad
theme. For A.E.S. Emerging Scholar and A.E.S. Scholar grants: The
interdisciplinary CARTSS faculty advisory board will evaluate proposals so
it is important to write in clear non-technical language. Priority will be
given to proposals directly contributing to thesis or dissertation research,
to proposals for which other funding is not easily available, to pilot
projects in preparation for external funding proposals, to scholars who have
not previously received CARTSS support, and to projects able to demonstrate
that the research activity is not possible in the absence of CARTSS support.
Emerging Scholars and A.E.S. Scholars will be asked to present their work to
the campus community during the academic year and to submit a brief
report/article on their research.
Please submit electronically (in Word) a 3 page double-spaced proposal
describing your project, the purpose and significance of your study and the
expected outcome(s). In addition, n a separate page, please provide a brief
budget, a timeline, and other funding utilized for your project. Attach a CV
(3 pg max) identifying relevant research accomplishments. A.E.S. Emerging
Scholar proposals must also include a letter of support from your
thesis/dissertation advisor.
Submit proposals electronically, with a subject heading including your last
name and the grant type you are applying for to cartss@colorado.edu.
