    SUBJECT: College Scholar Award Call for Proposals

    The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences has introduced a program
    intended to provide one semester College Scholar Awards to faculty in the
    College that will allow them to pursue full time research/creative work.
    These awards can be used in conjunction with a sabbatical, but it is not
    necessary. This program is being funded through the generosity of donors to
    the College. Ten awards are expected in 2009. The hope and intention is
    that the College Scholar Award program will continue for a number of years.

    A. Eligibility

    Both of the following criteria apply. At the time of application:

    1. Applicants must be full-time tenured faculty members in the College
    of Arts and Sciences;

    2. At least four years must have passed since the applicant's last
    sabbatical or, if the applicant has not previously taken a sabbatical, they
    must have held a full-time College of Arts and Sciences appointment for at
    least four consecutive years.

    B. Application procedure

    Applications are due by November 16, 2009 at 12 noon. All information and
    inquiries should be sent electronically to Anna.Jensen@colorado.edu
    <mailto:Anna.Jensen@colorado.edu> . Applications must include the
    following, in 12-point size font.

    1. A short (750 words or less) description of the proposed activities
    during the award period, including the title and goals of the project. The
    description should be general in nature explaining the value, importance and
    timeliness of the project. Whenever possible avoid technical details; the
    description should be understandable to people not experienced in their
    field.

    2. A vitae no longer than 3 pages. If applicable, include: date of
    previous sabbatical or faculty fellowship; grants held and publications in
    the last 3 years; give all academic positions and degrees (where obtained);
    and service performed for past 3 years (if space allows; otherwise give
    prior two years on all items etc.).

    3. Applicant's must request that their unit's Executive Committee or
    Chair send a statement of support, no more than two pages in length,
    regarding the applicant's project and record of accomplishment. Letter
    should comment on applicant's stature in field; discuss the importance of
    the fellowship to the applicant's scholarly career; include information
    about previous time off: e.g. sabbaticals, fellowships etc.

    4. In order to make a provision for unit size discrepancies and not to
    overburden the system, there will be limits on the numbers of applicants per
    unit. No more than 1 application per unit whose size is less than or equal
    to 15 FTE tenured faculty and no more than 2 applications per unit whose
    size is greater than 15 FTE tenured faculty, will be permitted.

    C. Additional Information

    Awards will be made competitively based on all information provided. The
    selection committee will be a group of Professors of Distinction in the
    College of Arts and Sciences.

    The College Scholar Award must be taken in any one of the four semesters;
    beginning the fall semester after selection.

    A choice must be made between a Faculty CRCW Fellowship and a College
    Scholar Award should they be awarded during the same academic year.

    The Dean will be in contact with the unit Chair regarding compensation for
    providing full release time for each College Scholar Award.

    According to A&S records, in 2009 the following units have more than 15 FTE:
    ANTH, APPM, APS, AAH, EBIO, MCDB, CHEM, ECON, ENGL, GEOG, GEOL, HIST, IPHY,
    MATH, PHIL, PHYS, PSCI, PSYC, SOCY.

    Each applicant should notify their Chair of their intention to apply for a
    College Scholar Award well before the application deadline. If a unit has
    more than the requisite number of applicants, the unit Chair/Executive
    Committee should decide who the unit will support for that round.
