SUBJECT: Teaching the First Day of Class
According to empirical studies, a successful first day of a college course
helps to insure a successful course overall. In this symposium, we will
discuss important ingredients needed to make your first day go well. These
ingredients include: Preparing an effective syllabus; stating clear ground
rules and expectations for the course, including class attendance:
establishing appropriate instructor "authority"; creating an environment
conducive to effective learning; communicating your passion for the subject
matter to your students; and addressing your own fear and anxiety about
working in front of a group of people whom you don't know. Teaching can and
should be rewarding for everyone concerned.
Facilitated by Michael Zimmerman, Professor of Philosophy, Director, Center
for Humanities and the Arts
This symposium takes place on Wednesday August 19, 2009, 2:00-3:30p.m.,
ATLAS 100.
