SUBJECT: Call for Proposals for Big 12 Fellowship
Applications are invited for Big 12 Fellowship awards to fund academic
exchanges between Big 12 institutions in AY 2009-2010. Proposals should be
received in the Office of Diversity Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE -
pronounced Odyssey) by 5 p.m., December 15, 2008.
PURPOSE
The chief academic officers (CAOs) of the Big 12 Athletic Conference believe
that our member schools should be more than an athletic conference -- that
we should also be connected by academic endeavors. To this end, the CAOs and
the chairs of the faculty senates of our respective schools agreed to
encourage faculty exchanges within the Big 12 by creating Faculty
Fellowships.
Once a year, the University of Colorado awards two Faculty Fellowships of
$2,500 each. The purpose is to enable the selected Faculty Fellows to spend
two weeks in residence at another Big 12 school to do research or creative
work, collaborate on curriculum development or other educational projects,
consult with colleagues and students, offer lectures, or engage in other
professional activities that would be of academic benefit to the Fellow (and
thereby to the home institution) as well as to the host institution. The
$2,500 grant is intended to cover the travel and living expenses of the
Fellow. (If you have received a BIG 12 grant within the last three years,
your proposal will receive the lowest priority for funding.)
The goal is to maximize the likelihood that each Faculty Fellow will be
immersed in the campus culture and activities of the host school.
Consequently two weeks is the desired length of the visit. Durations that
are somewhat shorter (but not less than one week) or longer, are also
possible depending upon the agreement between the visiting Fellow and the
host school. The amount of the grant maybe reduced proportionately for
shorter visits but remains the same for longer visits.
The Vice Chancellor's Awards and Grants Advisory Committee will review the
applications and recommend the awardees. The main selection criterion will
Be the merit of the application as it addresses the BIG 12 goals and the
Academic benefits of the fellowship to the awardee, to the home school, and
to the host school. Award funds should be expended within twelve months of
the award unless other arrangements are proposed as part of the application.
A report on the outcome of the project will be required at the end of the
twelve month period.

Application Procedure Checklist
_____Applicant holds a Boulder campus, full-time tenure-track faculty
appointment.
_____An interested faculty member should take the initiative to contact the
academic unit (department, research center or institute, or an
undepartmentalized school/college) of the Big 12 university of his or her
choice. The purposes of the visit should be mutually agreed upon,
Conditioned upon receipt of a Faculty Fellowship. The expectation is that
the host unit would incur no monetary cost from the visit. However, it will
be up to the host unit to decide what facilitates (e.g., office space,
library access, etc.) it can make available to the Faculty Fellow.
_____The interested faculty member should submit the following three
Documents to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Diversity and
Development:
_____a) A summary curriculum vitae (maximum of 2 pages);
_____b) A brief letter of application (2 pages) that describes:
- The dates and objectives of the fellowship visit,
- The conditional arrangements made with the host institution (with written
confirmation from the host),
- A short budget with the arrangements for covering his/her own teaching
responsibilities at CU-Boulder during the period of the fellowship (with the
approval of the Chair or Dean, as appropriate).
_____c) Letter of Support from Chair or Dean (brief). See enclosed
Chair's/Dean's Statement form.
It is also possible for members of an academic unit here to seek out a
particular colleague at another Big 12 school and invite this colleague to
Our campus as a Faculty Fellow. This individual would then have to secure a
Faculty Fellowship from his or her own home institution to visit CU-Boulder.
Thus, each institution's fellowships under this program are restricted to
Its own faculty.
