    SUBJECT: Seed Grants/3rd Butcher Symposium

    Dear CU Faculty Member,

Interdisciplinary research related to genomics and biotechnology is a top
priority for the University of Colorado. An Initiative in Molecular
Biotechnology has been launched to foster new research, teaching, and
technology development at the interfaces between medical, life sciences,
physical sciences, applied mathematics, computational sciences, and
engineering. One of the early advances in the establishment of this
Initiative was a generous gift from Charlie and Jane Butcher, which
supported a symposium in 2002 and provided seed grants to faculty embarking
on new collaborations in this area. Another group of grants was funded in
2005 by Jane Butcher and President Elizabeth Hoffman.

We are very pleased to announce a third round of funding that is a result of
funding once again from Jane Butcher and now from the CU-Boulder Chancellor
G.P. "Bud" Peterson. The third Butcher Symposium will be held Thursday,
November 16, 2007 at the Westin Westminster Hotel. The goals of the
symposium are several fold. First, a session will be held in which oral
presentations will be made by the second group of Butcher awardees. The
second goal is to bring together faculty in the various areas of research
related to genomics and biotechnology. A poster session will help to
establish new collaborations. Ten seed grants of up to $100,000 each will be
made to support these new collaborations. To be eligible for the seed grants
    you must present a poster.

The deadline for the grant applications will be early in 2008. There will be
a working lunch session to review and discuss the posters. The day will be
capped off by a wine and cheese reception. We encourage you to participate
in the poster session, as this provides an exciting forum for the exchange
of ideas. Please begin planning your posters and mark the date on your
calendars. Abstracts for the posters and registration (which is at no cost)
are due October 12th. Abstracts should be limited to 200 words. The website
for the submission of abstracts and registration is
    https://www.cu.edu/butcher/.

    Sincerely,
    Hank Brown
    President
