SUBJECT: Faculty "Individual Growth Grants"
The Leap Program is in transition. After five years LEAP is now entering its
final, capstone of NSF funding. To help ensure the long term impact of the
program we allocating funding for some individual faculty grants and invite
applications from tenured faculty members.
"Individual Growth Grants"
One of the issues we have come to recognize while running LEAP is that the
transition from being a junior faculty member to being a senior one is more
complex than just getting tenure. One of the most valuable aspects of being
awarded tenure is that it opens up the possibility of taking a longer term view
of one's career - but it can be hard to find support for new activities at this
career stage. Therefore, we have set aside $100K to allow us to provide small
grants (in the range of $5000 to $15,000) to provide opportunities for tenured
faculty members who have been at the institution at least ten years to enhance
their career portfolios. Our goal is to enable faculty members to expand their
horizons, perhaps by changing the direction of their research, or also by
taking advantage of the funding to work on activities that will strengthen
diversity, and/or support work-life balance. Proposals for these funds should
be less than 1000 words long and should include a short description
of how the funds will be used and an explanation of how the funds will
advance the faculty members career. Any funds allocated will need to be spent
before December 31st, 2007. The proposals will be reviewed by a panel set up by
the office of faculty affairs. Applications should be submitted via campus mail
to Carole Capsalis - Campus Box 390 and the deadline for applying is February
19th, 2007.
