SUBJECT: New Backup Power Supplies Will Increase Network Reliability

During the summer term, Information Technology Services will complete the
installation of new uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for network switches
throughout the campus. These devices will provide backup battery power to
sustain network switches during short-duration power outages or fluctuations so
that access to campus network services, including UCB Wireless, is not interrupted.

A majority of network outages occur when there is a short-term power
disruption, often lasting just a few minutes. The new UPSs will be scaled to
handle power outages of up to 30 minutes so your online work can continue
    despite these disruptions.

The installation of the UPSs is expected to start May 26 and be completed
before the start of the fall semester. There will be brief network outages - no
more than 10 minutes - during installation of the UPSs which will be scheduled
on weekday mornings between 5:30 and 7 a.m. ITS networking representatives will
work with departmental Computer Support Representatives to schedule the
installations in advance. These infrastructure improvements, which are aimed at
improving network reliability, will come at no direct cost to departments.

If you have questions about the installation of these new backup power
supplies, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call
303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone). Phone help is available Monday
    through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
