SUBJECT: CU Boulder Energy Initiative: Formation of an Energy Institute?

    Dear Colleagues,

Hopefully many of you are aware of the presence and activities of the
University of Colorado Energy Initiative (ei.colorado.edu), which was formed
in early 2006. Last semester a faculty steering group was convened by
Provost DiStefano to study and make recommendations about the future of the
Energy Initiative. Our committee has made the unanimous recommendation that
the interests and future goals of the Initiative can be best met by
subsuming the activities of the Initiative into a new joint energy
institute. We imagine that this new institute will be located on the CU
campus but will be formed in close partnership with the National Renewable
Energy Lab (NREL), the main branch of which is located in Golden, CO. A
draft of the report can be found at http://ei.colorado.edu/IReport

We are interested in feedback on these ideas from across the campus
community. For this we have set up a Zoomerang poll, with a close date of
Mar 2. It can be accessed at

    http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB228TWYKSAW8.

The poll is short and should easily be completed in less than 15 minutes,
though it also has space for more detailed comments from those of you that
are so inclined. You may fill out any or all portions of the poll.

    Sincerely,
    Dan Dessau
    For the Steering Committee
