    SUBJECT: Computer Equipment Power Management

In 2007, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed an Executive Order directing
all state agencies to reduce energy use 20 percent below 2006 levels by
    2012.

The university's more than 25,000 desktops, laptops and monitors use 4 to 5
percent of total campus electricity, costing about $1.25 million per year
and creating 6,300 tons of CO2. A lot of this energy use is unproductive and
could be eliminated with proper power management and equipment use.

Your computing support representative (CSR) may be making some changes to
the computer equipment in your office that will improve the energy
efficiency of these systems and help CU achieve the goals set out by the
governor. The Campus Office of Resource Conservation, the CU Environmental
Center and the CSR liaison are asking for your support as the CSRs take
    actions to reach these goals.

These actions will ultimately reduce campus energy costs as well as carbon
dioxide emissions. The actions CSRs may take include:

    1. Power managing desktop computers and monitors to go to sleep mode after
    10 minutes of inactivity.

    2. Buying computer equipment (desktops, laptops, monitors, servers, etc.)
    with energy-smart options only.

    3. Encouraging department staff to turn off desktops after business hours
    and posting office energy-saving posters.

    4. Enabling power management features on printers and consolidating
printers, when possible, to reduce unnecessary energy usage.

    5. Exchanging CRT monitors (the boxy ones) with more efficient flat-screen
    monitors.

You can learn who your CSR is on the Tier 2 CSR look up website tool at
    http://www.colorado.edu/its/tier2/lookup.html.
If you have any concerns or questions about these changes please contact Rob
Hall, Energy Program Manager, CU Environmental Center, ext. 2-8308, email
    robert.hall@colorado.edu

    Thank you for your support,

Moe Tabrizi, Campus Resource Conservation Officer
