SUBJECT: Our Plan to Improve CULink Performance

In the recent weeks the campus's e-mail and calendaring service, CULink, has
exhibited an alarming decrease in performance, particularly during periods of
heavy usage. This has resulted in unreasonably long waits to login and general
    slowness when using the service.

Since these problems started, we have been closely monitoring the situation and
performing maintenance as needed to help correct these problems; however, this
periodic maintenance has only been effective in the short term. As a
longer-term solution, ITS is planning to implement a new storage solution for
CULink. Unfortunately, it appears that moving data to this new storage solution
could cause CULink to be unstable. Therefore we are planning to install the new
storage during the upcoming break between semesters.

In the meantime, we believe it will be necessary to perform regular
maintenance--lasting approximately one hour on Thursdays at 5 a.m.--in order to
maintain CULink performance at an acceptable level. During maintenance, CULink
will be unavailable but incoming messages will be queued for delivery after
maintenance concludes. No e-mail should be lost as a result of this
maintenance. We have been and will continue to communicate about CULink
regularly to the Tier 2, computing support representatives in your departments.
ITS will provide details of these scheduled maintenance events to all staff,
faculty and students in Buff Bulletins, CUConnect announcements and on the ITS
    webpage: http://www.colorado.edu/its/.

ITS is keenly aware of the vital role e-mail plays in helping the university
carry out its mission on a daily basis. We are not pleased with the recent
performance of CULink and will do all within our power to return the service to
    a state of consistent dependability.

As always, if you have questions about CULink or any other ITS services, you
can contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or 303-735-HELP (5-HELP
    from a campus phone) Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
