SUBJECT: Homeland Security Request: chemical use on the Boulder campus
Dear Deans, Departmental Chairs and Directors,
I am requesting your assistance with this very important request: I have
learned that VERY FEW (23% of 300) individuals have responded to the prior
request. This request is very important and I need your assistance in
disseminating the information once again to the employees who need to respond.
Failure to respond will bear serious implications on the University of Colorado
at Boulder by the Department of Homeland Security. Thank you in advance for
your assistance! Stein Sture, Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the
Graduate School
ATTENTION: LABORATORY STAFF, PIs, PROCTORS AND OTHERS WHO USE CHEMICALS:
The US Department of Homeland Security has promulgated new rules pertaining to
chemical management and security. The regulation is requiring universities to
inventory laboratory and shop chemicals, and determine locations and quantities
of 344 "chemicals of interest." This will place demands upon CU staff, faculty
and administrators, as well as the Environmental Health and Safety Department
(EH&S).
We MUST HAVE YOU RESPONSES BY WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2007 AT 5:00 P.M. in
order to comply with the Department of Homeland Security's request.
THOSE OF YOU ALREADY IN THE CU-BOULDER EH&S CHEMICAL INVENTORY SYSTEM (CIS):
1. Pull up the web-based inventory site <http://128.138.115.8/firstpage.htm>
which is also accessible from the EH&S website http://ehs.colorado.edu.
2. Log in using your EH&S-provided user name and password. If you've
forgotten your user name and/or password, contact Mindy Hodges at 5-3068,

3. Update your inventory. When you are done and before you exit the program,
complete the new VERIFICATION requirement by clicking on the complete inventory
verification button (or hyperlink), fill in the requested information, and
select "submit". EH&S will ask you to repeat this update activity every six
months.

completed spreadsheet to Melinda.Hodges@Colorado.edu. Melinda
(303-735-3068) will get back to you with a user name and password; she'll also
let you know when the inventory you provided will be entered into the CIS so
