SUBJECT: IECE 2007-08 Academic Development Support Request for Proposals
The Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement (IECE) invites proposals from
all CU-Boulder Faculty (tenured, tenure track, instructors, and GPTIs) for work
related to the IECE program plans.
The campus-wide Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement, announces its
fourth annual opportunity for faculty to apply for funding (all monies have
been raised from external sources) to carry out projects which further the
mission and goals of the IECE. Please note that we cannot provide funding for
The IECE aims to honor and significantly augment the many currently successful
efforts from several parts of this campus which aim to implement one of the
campus's formally stated missions, viz. -- "foster - responsible citizenship."
We believe that the faculty and students of this campus are particularly
committed to ethical inquiry and to developing responsible citizenship; the
IECE aims to attract private resources to support, encourage and significantly
aid in these efforts. We are enthusiastic about the potential for enriching
the experiences of CU-Boulder students connecting to the state, local and
national communities of which we are a part and for encouraging the development
of life-long commitments to ethical inquiry and responsible civic engagement.
The IECE wants to encourage faculty to include civic engagement and ethical
inquiry into their academic offerings wherever and whenever appropriate. The
IECE steering committee currently holds a very broad, inclusive view of what
might constitute appropriate activities and invites new suggestions from
faculty. Possible examples include development of new courses, modification of
current courses to include a significant share of focus on civic engagement,
non-partisan ethical inquiries which, for example, engage the proper roles of
educated citizenship, leadership of group CU-community projects which also meet
academic credit requirements, or workshops for faculty and student development.
We are especially interested in projects which would leverage the IECE's
financial resources to aid efforts to raise additional funds and be
self-sustaining following an initial support or catalyst phase. All faculty
(including instructors and GPTIs) may apply for funds to support new work
in ethical inquiry and/or civic engagement. Particular possibilities
include course buyout, summer salary, student salaries, operational expenses
or, with the appropriate approvals and permissions, overload salary. For all
project proposals, we expect applicants to have fully informed their
appropriate deans and chairs and received their approval. We anticipate making
five to ten awards of $2,000-$10,000.
Please submit an electronic narrative of five or fewer pages describing your
proposed project along with an appropriately detailed budget and budget
email@example.com . In the budget justification, please note whether
your project is currently receiving funding from other campus units such as the
Service Learning Office or Continuing Education's Outreach Committee or other
non-campus entities and if so, how much funding is being received, or if you
will be applying to such groups for funding. The proposal must also contain a
statement describing how you will sustain this project once IECE grant funding
The IECE Steering Committee will serve as the awards panel. Application
evaluation criteria include the following:
--Fit with IECE Goal: The IECE seeks to stimulate development of a strong
campus orientation toward civic engagement and ethical inquiry with both
categories being viewed broadly and inclusively.
--Impact on Students and Faculty: We seek to leverage our resources to include
many students and many faculty wherever possible, so proposals which address
this potential influence will be given a higher priority.
--Sustainability: Projects which can clearly demonstrate a plan to sustain its
activities once IECE funding ends will be given a higher priority.
--Academic Quality: Projects viewed as highly worthy academically will be given

proposals received by February 1, 2008, for this round of funding, and
announcements should be ready by mid-March, 2008.
Recipients will be required to submit a final report, syllabus and other
documentation which will be put on the IECE website and will be expected to
attend IECE Faculty Support Lunches (several each year) and present their work,
if requested, at these lunches or other IECE forums.
