Environmental Management System

An Environmental Management System applies the Total Quality Management principals of "Plan, Do, Check and Improve" to organize and prioritize Environmental Health and Safety's responsibilities.

Plan - prioritize so what must be done gets done first
Do - make sure nothing falls through the cracks
Check - track what is being done
Improve - so it can be done better.

An EMS focuses not only on what EH&S does but also on why and when. Over time, this systematic approach identifies gaps in performance, improves the anticipation of unmet needs, and enables strategic planning for them. This will result in greater efficiencies, savings in time and money and – most importantly – better support from EH&S of the academic and research goals of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
