New Critical-Thinking Course offered at both 4000 and 5000 levels for Spring 2008 semester

Dr. Yan Linhart is offering an new Critical-Thinking Course offered at both the 4000 and 5000 levels: Tuesday & Thursday 4:00-5:15, called Evolution in Action for the Spring 2008 semester.

 

Pieter Johnson & colleagues demonstrate links between runoff and developmental problems in amphibians

Piet and his colleagues have experimentally demonstrated links between fertilizers, farm runoff, eutrophication of ponds, algal growth, abundance of snails, and developmental problems in amphibians.

Clinton Francis awarded the Robert B. Berry Student Award

At the recent American Ornithologists Union meeting in Laramie , Clinton Francis was awarded the Robert B. Berry Student Award. This award is presented to the most outstanding student presentation on research pertaining to avian conservation.  Clinton 's presentation was entitled: “Nest site selection and success of three common piñon-juniper birds in response to a chronic industrial noise disturbance.”

 

Tomas Carlo on track at Penn State
August 30th 2007
Tomas Carlo, who received his Ph D from us, in May of 2005. He has accepted a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level  in the Biology Department at Penn State University .

 

NSF award for Rebecca Safran
June 19th, 2007
NSF panels rarely fund proposals on the first submission, but the Animal Behavior Panel approved funding for Rebecca Safran's first proposal. The research is on sexual selection in barn swallows, and it will utilize field sites in Israel,  England, and Boulder County. The award is for a study that will last two years.

Friedman Nature paper featured in BioEssays article
April 13th, 2007
Ned Friedman has been studying the developmental steps that produce endosperm, and he has seen something that has not been reported previously. When considered in an evolutionary context, it challenges some established conventions, and suggests new hypotheses concerning the early evolution of plants. His original work was published in Nature recently; attached is a highlight of his research that appeared in BioEssays.

 

CU Honors Professor Russ Monson
April 12th, 2007
CU has just announced that it is bestowing the honorary title of Professor of Distinction on Russ Monson.
Those of us who know Russ are not surprised that he has garnered another honor. He has compiled a truly outstanding record of achievement, and he has balanced research, teaching, and service admirably.
Although another honor comes as no surprise, this honor is really special; this honorary rank was only established a year ago, and after this round of announcements, Russ is one of only eight professors to have been granted this distinction.
