Research Interests

The paleobotany program at Ohio University is focused on integrating data from fossil and living plants to address questions about the evolution of terrestrial organisms within a developmental context. This includes utilizing anatomical "fingerprints" of developmental mechanisms to infer the changes in regulatory genetics that underlie the evolution of extinct plants and the origins of modern plants.

We work with the full range of available fossils from Devonian through Tertiary deposits, and study specimens that show external morphology, internal anatomy, and ultrastructural features. Material is collected from all around the World, and many our studies begin by developing whole-plant concepts for extinct species.
