I use traditional morphological and anatomical techniques to investigate plant structure and development. My lab has worked on many aspects of plant development, including flower development, the structure and evolution of the secondary xylem, leaf structure and anatomy, the structure and development of secretory trichomes, pollen structure, and calcium function in pollen and trichome development. We have also developed new visual methods of character description, and new types of keys. Work in these latter areas has led to the development of completely visual keys, both on the computer and on paper. We have also applied our new character concept to the development of an innovative method of learning organism identification, and have published this method as a visual-learning program on CD.
