Course Description
In this course you will gain experience teaching. The course is designed to be a
practicum in which you will work in the labs in a teaching role. You will be assigned
to one laboratory section. The section will be run by a graduate-student teaching-assistant
and you will act as an assistant. Your responsibilities will be to provide guidance and
general information to students as they proceed through the labs; participate in training
exercises for graduate-student teaching assistants, act as the teaching assistant during
two labs over the semester.
Your grade will depend on your performance on the following items.
Active participation in preparatory sessions
Active participation in laboratory sessions
Interactions with students
Performance on each of the two lectures
Participation in TA-training workshops
(Since this is a practicum, effort counts. This is an opportunity for you to explore teaching in a relatively secure environment. So if you actively participate and get involved you will do well in this class. If you have problems and your ÒAÓ grade is in jeopardy, I will let you know.)
Class Times
Preparation Session Ð Fridays 9 Ð 11 AM.
Choose one class time to teach from the following: Monday through Thursday 8 to 11, 11 to 2, 2 to 5.
Requirements
In order to get into the class you will need to have earned a B or better in General Biology Lab I
or the equivalent in other biology classes.

To register, contact Dr. John Basey to get a letter of permission to get into the class.
Accomodations for Disabilities
Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a letter from
Disability Services (DS) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the

In this class, I will make reasonable and appropriate accommodations for
students who have conflicts between religious observance dates and course examinations
