Research Interests
My
main research interests are in the field of macrosystematics of
angiosperms, and flower diversity and evolution. We are in an exciting
time of considerable progress in plant systematics. A new phylogenetic
framework is being built by molecular systematics. This allows
us to reconstruct the evolution of structural and biological features
with more confidence than ever before. New clades are being found
by phylogenetic techniques, and these should now be studied comparatively
as to their evolutionary patterns. Additional significant sources
of new data are the large number of recently discovered Cretaceous
fossil flowers and the new field of evo-devo. A synthetic approach
is required to bring these different fields together for a better
understanding of the present diversity of plants on our planet.
