MORPH
supports visits to botanical gardens for graduate students, postdoctorals,
and junior faculty. These grants are targeted
toward individuals with
an interest in expanding organismic and molecular
evolutionary developmental studies to include a broader sampling
of plant biodiversity. The primary goal of the grants program
is to support individuals with
a desire to bridge the gap between organismic and molecular
aspects of plant evo-devo.
Each year, MORPH
is able to fund up to ten botanical garden travel grants at
$3,000 per grant. All funds for this year have already been committed. Please check back next year for more travel grants.
Botanical garden
travel grants are evaluated quarterly. Deadlines are August 1,
November 1, February 1, and May 1.
Application materials
A letter from the major advisor (for postdoctorals and graduate
students).
A letter from the MORPH-affiliated contact
person at the botanical garden (indicating a willingness
to host the applicant and a consensus
about the proposed activities
of the visitor. The letter must include an explicit statement
acknowledging that the host institution understands that MORPH
funds may not be used to underwrite
costs associated
with the proposed research activities.
A letter from the applicant detailing research plans and proposed
interactions. This letter should indicate how the botanical garden
visit
will support ongoing research projects, and it must
demonstrate that this work cannot be supported by other NSF funding.
A proposed budget for travel costs and per diem for lodging and
meals.
Each
letter should be no more than two pages. The applicant letter
must specifically document the fact that the botanical garden
has representatives of a group of plants relating to an ongoing
plant
developmental evolution study in an organismic or a molecular
laboratory.
By NSF rules, the budget
may not be used to directly fund costs associated with the proposed
research activities (e.g., supplies).
How to apply
