Post-Baccalaureate Licensure Program

The Post-Baccalaureate (Post-BA) licensure programs lead to initial teacher licensure issued by the CO Department of Education in

  • Elementary (K-6) Education
  • K-12 Music Education
  • Secondary (7-12) Education
The secondary fields include English, mathematics, science, social studies, and the foreign languages: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.  To be eligible for licensure, candidates must successfully complete all academic and field experience requirements, pass a state-approved licensure exam, and complete student teaching.

Candidates for these programs have earned a bachelor’s degree within the liberal arts from an accredited institution of higher education.  The degree does not have to be within the licensure field.  However, state-mandated licensure requirements must be fulfilled so that we may recommend candidates for licensure to the state.

Previous college course work will be evaluated for appropriateness toward the fulfillment of any applicable licensure requirements.  Any academic requirements not previously satisfied may be completed over the course of the program, up to a reasonable amount.  The Post-BA program may be completed in as few as three full-time fall/spring semesters, but it is flexible enough in the semesters prior to student teaching to allow a candidate to stretch out their program to accommodate for work and/or family responsibilities.  Be aware that part-time attendance and the completion of academic requirements will lengthen the course of study.

Post-BA course work combines on-campus learning with in-school experiences.  Field experiences within the program fall into two categories: practicum and student teaching.  Every licensure candidate will complete a minimum of three practicum-based in-school experiences prior to student teaching.  Our aim is to phase-in responsibility across practicum settings, to elaborate and deepen the close connections between field work and course work, and to develop performance-based evidence of proficiency.  Student teaching is the culminating event in the licensure sequence, in which candidates spend one entire semester, full-time, in a school.

Option to Continue Studies at the Master’s Level
Candidates who complete the post-baccalaureate program and wish to continue their studies in the master’s program in Instruction & Curriculum in the Content Areas may transfer six credits of coursework from their initial teacher preparation program. The first years as a teacher are critical to a teacher’s development; accordingly, our master’s programs allow individuals to stay connected with the university in these formative years. The master’s program provides a supportive framework while individuals deepen and extend what was learned during initial teacher preparation. Some master’s degrees allow individuals to complete requirements for an advanced teaching endorsement in either literacy or linguistically diverse education. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the master’s degree program. Admission to the master’s program is competitive.
