Curriculum and Instruction (C & I) MA Plus Secondary Social Studies Program
This program leads to a master’s of arts in education with a Colorado Provisional license in Social Studies for seventh through twelfth grade. Teachers at the secondary level are licensed in one teaching field. This is a two-year, cohort-based program that begins in the fall semester.
Course Requirements for Secondary Social Studies Licensure
MA Plus candidates must satisfy the academic preparation requirements in general liberal arts and their content area. Transcripts will be evaluated during the admission process for courses that fulfill those requirements. Master’s Level Professional Course Work
Course work in the Secondary Social Studies Teacher Licensure Program is designed to provide a coherent learning experience that culminates in a successful student teaching semester.
In the first semester (fall), candidates take three courses with the Secondary MA+ cohort and one course focused on their teaching discipline. Candidates spend one full day per week in a secondary school with a diverse student population. Practicum experiences give candidates opportunities to observe classroom interactions and to engage in some teaching practices, e.g., one-on-one coaching, working with students in small groups, and teaching lessons to a class. Practicum is a place to make connections between ideas presented in education courses and the daily lives of teachers and adolescents in secondary schools.

In the second semester (spring), candidates take two courses with the Secondary MA+ cohort and two courses in their teaching discipline. Candidates spend two half-days per week in a secondary Social Studies classroom where the focus is deepening your understanding of teaching practices that foster student learning.

We suggest taking the required content-area course, which may be met with a 3000-, 4000-, or 5000-level course in of the scientific disciplines.
Student Teaching
Student Teaching occurs in the third semester of the program. All licensure candidates who wish to student teach must complete all course requirements and pass a state-approved content area licensure exam prior to the Student Teaching semester. Click here for more information on licensure exams. Upon successful completion of student teaching, candidates are recommended to the State of Colorado for licensure.
Fourth Semester Secondary Social Studies Course Options for C & I Degree Completion
In the fourth semester Secondary MA+ candidates complete remaining courses for their master’s degree and complete the comprehensive examination. In consultation with their faculty advisor, candidates select remaining courses from graduate-level education courses and content-related courses in Arts & Sciences. Education courses are typically offered in the late afternoon.
