Master's Degree Program in Curriculum and Instruction (C & I) Program Description C & I programs focus on teaching and learning in the following curricular areas: K-12 humanities, K-12 math/science, and K-12 literacy. Course work focuses on foundations of learning, foundations of education, and subject matter knowledge and pedagogy. The programs prepare students to understand the complexities of classroom contexts and teaching practice. The K-12 humanities and K-12 math/science programs are designed to support teachers who are interested in developing greater understanding and expertise in the teaching and learning of either the humanities or math/science. Courses within the K-12 humanities program concentration support teachers to strengthen discipline-specific content knowledge, knowledge for teaching humanities, and a greater understanding of how instructional approaches and curriculum can be tailored to foster students’ understanding of concepts and questions about human experience and culture that invite a multidisciplinary response. Courses within the K-12 mathematics and science program concentration help teachers develop their own discipline-specific content knowledge, knowledge for teaching mathematics and science, and a greater understanding of how instructional approaches and curriculum can be tailored to foster students’ conceptual understanding of content, procedural proficiency, and tendencies toward inquiry, creativity, and curiosity as learners of mathematics and science. The K-12 literacy program focuses on dimensions of literacy such as the integration of reading and writing instruction, alternative forms of literacy assessment, and literature-based literacy instruction. In addition, graduate students are expected to view literacy instruction and acquisition from a variety of perspectives as they take courses from scholars who are prominent in areas of bilingual and multicultural education, evaluation and measurement, teacher education, and instructional and developmental psychology. The K-12 literacy program also prepares individuals to meet Colorado state requirements for an advanced endorsement in K-12 reading. The C & I master’s programs are closely associated with a special program in the School of Education--Partners in Education (PIE). PIE is designed for beginning teachers. The program allow teachers to teach in K-12 schools, receive professional support in their classrooms, and to earn a master’s degree concurrently. MA Degrees |
