Master's Degree Program in Instruction and Curriculum in the Content Areas with an Empasis in Elementary Mathematics Education
This program is designed to support teachers who are interested in developing greater understanding and expertise in the teaching and learning of mathematics at the K-8 grade levels. The program helps teachers develop their own content knowledge in mathematics, as well as greater understanding of how instructional strategies and curriculum can be tailored to meet the needs, mathematical intuitions, and experiences of young children.
Requirements for Admission
Admission to all graduate programs in the School of Education is competitive. Meeting minimal admission criteria does not guarantee admission.
All persons seeking admission to this MA-ICCA program must meet the following minimum admission requirements.
- Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and an elementary teaching license.
- Have a minimum 2.75 undergraduate grade point average (GPA), and a minimum of 3.00 in all previous course work in Education.
- Have a minimum 3.00 post-baccalaureate GPA.
- Teaching experience is strongly recommended.
Course Work Requirements
A minimum of 30 semester hours of course work beyond the bachelor’s degree is required for the MA degree. A maximum of nine semester hours may be transfer credit or taken as a special student. Please see the course requirement listings on the following page for more detailed information about program requirements.
Required Courses (12 credits):
- EDUC 5105-3 Teaching for Understanding
- EDUC 5716-3 Basic Statistical Methods
- EDUC 5115-3 Modern Trends in Teaching
- EDUC 5205-3 Elementary Mathematics: Theory and Method (or equivalent)
Mathematics Content Requirement (6 credits):
Six semester hours of course work designed to enhance students’ mathematical content knowledge are required. Students may choose any two courses (six credits) listed in either of the options described in the columns below.
Option One:
Mathematics content courses (Mathematics Department) |
Option Two:
Mathematics for Teachers courses (School of Education) |
MATH 3000 Intro. to Abstract Mathematics |
EDUC 5575 (001): Algebra for Teachers |
MATH 3110 Intro. to the Theory of Numbers |
EDUC 5575 (002): Geometry for Teachers |
MATH 3130 Introduction to Linear Algebra |
EDUC 5575 (003): Number for Teachers |
MATH 3140 Introduction to Modern Algebra |
EDUC 5575 (004): Probability and Statistics for Teachers
|
MATH 3170 Combinatorics I |
MATH 3210 Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometries |
(These courses are typically taught in two-week blocks during summer school sessions.) |
MATH 3720 Computable Functions |
MATH 4000 Foundations of Mathematics |
MATH 4720 History of Mathematics |
(You must obtain prior approval from the Graduate School for MATH 3XXX courses.) |
Electives (12 credits):
Nine credits (either transfer credits or elective credits) must be selected with the approval of the MA adviser. It is strongly recommended that elective credits be taken from the Mathematics for Teachers strand of courses listed in the column above. Other possible electives might include:
- EDUC 6804-3:Topics in Mathematics Education
- EDUC 5706-3: Elementary Science: Theory and Methods
- EDUC 5315-3: Nature of Science and Science Education
- EDUC 5445-3: Curriculum for Multicultural Education
- EDUC 6318-3: Psychological Foundations of Education
- EDUC 6328-3: Advanced Child Growth and Educational Development
EDUC 6338-3: Cognitive Processes in Education
Comprehensive Exams
A written comprehensive examination must be completed during the candidate's
last term of study for the MA degree. The examination will cover the content
of all work in the program. Candidates transferring course work from other institutions
to this program (up to 9 hours may be taken at other approved institutions) are
responsible for the same knowledge as those whose work has been taken entirely
at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Candidates must be registered for the term in which they take the exams.
