The School of Education University of Colorado offers the Master’s degree in Social, Multicultural, and Bilingual Foundations of Education (SMBF) with emphasis in Bilingual/ESL/Multicultural Education. Completion of this program qualifies one for a Colorado teacher license endorsement in the area of Linguistically Diverse Education (K-12). Individuals who are fluent in Spanish and complete the endorsement in Linguistically Diverse Learners may also be eligible for the Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education endorsement. The program provides a range of direct experiences in bilingual/ multicultural/ESL field programs with the opportunity to develop skills and competencies essential to the work of educators of the linguistically different learner. The overall purpose of the program is to develop sound bilingual/multicultural/ESL competencies in teachers as well as to develop educational leadership for service in schools.  Program course work includes foundations of bilingual/multicultural education, assessment practices and issues, methods in bilingual and ESL, and a field-based practicum. Participation in the program may be on a “part-time” basis. International students seeking participation in this program should consult with a faculty advisor before applying for admission and must complete a practicum in a public school before beginning course work for the degree. This program is not appropriate for persons wishing to teach English as a foreign language in other countries.

Requirements for Admission

All persons seeking admission to the MA-SMBF program must meet the following minimum admission requirements. Admission to all graduate programs in the School of Education is competitive. Meeting minimal admission criteria does not guarantee admission.

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Have a minimum 2.75 undergraduate grade point average (GPA), and in all previous coursework in Education.
  • Have a minimum 3.00 post-baccalaureate GPA.
  • Hold a valid Colorado teaching license (or the equivalent from another state).
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience.
  • Competence in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Commitment to the field of Bilingual/Multicultural/ESL education.
  • Cross cultural sensitivity.

The suggested order for taking the following courses should be discussed with the student’s advisor prior to registering for the first term of enrollment. *EDUC 5615 is a recommended prerequisite for 5625.
**This includes about 200 hours of in-school work. This may be taken in two 2 semester hour blocks.

Additional Requirements for Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education Endorsement
Students who have met all requirements for the Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement and who have demonstrated the following three competencies (1) a high level of proficiency in the structure and use of another language other than English, (2) effective delivery of content instruction in his/her native or heritage language, and (3) a high level of proficiency in English language use and functions, may be eligible for the Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education Endorsement.

PLACE Assessments:
To be eligible for recommendation for the program’s endorsement, Linguistically Diverse Education (8.22) candidates must pass the appropriate PLACE Exam, Content Field Assessment (Linguistically Diverse Education) Exam (17).

To be eligible for recommendation for the program’s endorsement, Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education endorsement (8.23) candidates must also pass the appropriate PLACE Exam, Content Field Assessment (Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education) Exam (16).

Transfer Credit
Transfer credits from accredited institutions are accepted by CU Boulder only after approval by the department chair/program director and under the special conditions outlined in the Graduate School Rules. Transfer credit is defined as any credit earned at another accredited institution, credits earned on another campus of the CU system, or credits earned as a non-degree student within the CU system. The maximum amount of work that may be transferred from another accredited institution to CU Boulder is nine semester hours and is accepted only after approval of the program director. All courses accepted for transfer must be graduate level courses. A course in which a grade of B- or lower was received will not be accepted for transfer. Transfer course work must have been completed in the five years prior to acceptance to the program. Credit may not be transferred until the student has completed 6 credits of graduate level course work as a degree-seeking student on the CU Boulder campus with a 3.0 GPA. No transfer credit will be allowed in place of EDUC 5595.

Post-baccalaureate Students from CU Boulder’s Teacher Education Program: Students who completed the entire initial teacher preparation program in either elementary or secondary education at CU Boulder at the post-baccalaureate level may transfer one 5000-level course completed during their initial teacher preparation program. To do so, they must begin the master’s program within three years of completing the initial teacher education program. If students transfer in courses, they may petition to waive the following requirement in this master’s degree: EDUC 5435: Materials and Methods in Bilingual/Multicultural.

Students who completed some or all of the initial teacher preparation program in elementary or secondary education at CU Boulder at the undergraduate level may also be eligible to transfer the following two of the above courses. Please consult the graduate program assistant.

Comprehensive Exams
A comprehensive examination must be completed during the student’s last term of study for the MA degree. The examination will cover the content of all work in the program. Students transferring course work from other institutions to this program (up to 9 hours may be taken at other approved institutions) are responsible for the same knowledge as those whose work has been taken entirely at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Students must be registered for the term in which they take the exams.
