The School of Education University of Colorado offers the Master’s degree in Educational Equity & Cultural Diversity (EECD) with an emphasis in Linguistically Diverse Education. Completion of this program qualifies one for a Colorado endorsement in the area of Linguistically Diverse Education (K-12). Individuals who are fluent in Spanish and complete the endorsement in Linguistically Diverse Learners may also be eligible for the Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education endorsement.The program provides a range of direct experiences in bilingual/ multicultural/ESL education with the opportunity to develop skills and competencies essential to the work of educators of the linguistically different learner. The overall purpose of the program is to develop sound bilingual/multicultural/ESL competencies in teachers and school leaders. Program course work includes foundations of bilingual/multicultural education, assessment practices and issues, methods in bilingual and ESL, and a field-based practicum. Participation in the program may be on a “part-time” basis. International students seeking participation in this program should consult with a faculty advisor before applying for admission and must complete a practicum in a public school. This program is not appropriate for individuals wishing to teach English as a foreign language in other countries.
Requirements for Admission
All persons seeking admission to this program must meet the following minimum admission requirements. Admission to all graduate programs in the School of Education is competitive. Meeting minimal admission criteria does not guarantee admission.
- Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Have a minimum 2.75 undergraduate grade point average (GPA), and in all previous coursework in Education.
- Have a minimum 3.00 post-baccalaureate GPA.
- Hold a valid Colorado teaching license (or the equivalent from another state).
- Minimum of one year teaching experience.
- Competence in reading, writing and speaking English.
- Commitment to the field of Bilingual/Multicultural/ESL education.
- Cross cultural sensitivity.

A total of 31 semester hours are required for the master’s degree and endorsement in Linguistically Diverse Education. The suggested order for taking the following courses should be discussed with the student’s advisor prior to registering for the first term of enrollment. *EDUC 5615 is a recommended prerequisite for 5625.
**This includes about 200 hours of in-school work. This may be taken in two 2 semester hour blocks.
Additional Requirements for Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education Endorsement
Students who have met all requirements for the Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement and who have demonstrated the following three competencies (1) a high level of proficiency in the structure and use of another language other than English, (2) effective delivery of content instruction in his/her native or heritage language, and (3) a high level of proficiency in English language use and functions, may be eligible for the Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education Endorsement.
PLACE Assessments:
To be eligible for recommendation for the program’s endorsement, Linguistically Diverse Education (8.22) candidates must pass the appropriate PLACE Exam, Content Field Assessment (Linguistically Diverse Education) Exam (17).
To be eligible for recommendation for the program’s endorsement, Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education endorsement (8.23) candidates must also pass the appropriate PLACE Exam, Content Field Assessment (Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Bilingual Education) Exam (16).
Transfer Credit
Transfer credits from accredited institutions are accepted by CU Boulder only after approval by the department chair/program director and under the special conditions outlined in the Graduate School Handbook. Transfer credit is defined as any credit earned at another accredited institution, credits earned on another campus of the CU system, or credits earned as a non-degree student within the CU system. The maximum amount of work that may be transferred from another accredited institution to CU Boulder is nine semester hours and is accepted only after approval of the program director. All courses accepted for transfer must be graduate level courses. A course in which a grade of B- or lower was received will not be accepted for transfer. Transfer course work must have been completed in the five years prior to acceptance to the program. Credit may not be transferred until the student has completed 6 credits of graduate level course work as a degree-seeking student on the CU Boulder campus with a 3.0 GPA. No transfer credit will be allowed in place of EDUC 5595.
Students who completed CU’s Teacher Education Program as Post-baccalaureate Students or as Undergraduate Students may be eligible to transfer one 5000-level course completed during their initial teacher preparation program at CU. Students who transfer a course may petition to waive the following requirement in this master’s degree: EDUC 5445-3 Curriculum for Multicultural Education.
Comprehensive Exams
The comprehensive examination requirement is met through the successful completion of a portfolio, which is completed as part of EDUC 5595. Individuals in the PIE program must enroll in a 1-credit section of EDUC 5595 to complete their portfolio.
