Partners in Education (PIE)

Since 1987 the Partners in Education (PIE) program has fostered collaborations between surrounding school districts (Boulder Valley, St. Vrain and Brighton) and the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder. One major goal of the PIE Program is to provide professional development opportunities to teachers at all levels of experience. First-year "PIE Teachers," many of whom are CU-Boulder graduates, obtain teaching positions in one of the partnership school districts and participate in an intense induction program, which includes starting a Master's degree program through the School of Education. Master teachers from the partnership school districts, called "Clinical Professors," are released at full salary from their classroom assignments to:

  1. Mentor the first-year PIE Teachers 1/2 day each week;
  2. Teach methods courses with regular faculty in the undergraduate teacher education program at the School of Education or supervise a cohort of student teachers in their district; and
  3. Work in special district projects.

Partners in Education is designed so that in exchange for the work clinical professors do as instructors and supervisors in our licensure programs, CU-Boulder faculty and doctoral candidates provide services quid pro quo to school districts. For example, they serve as consultants on district program evaluations, conduct in-service programs and workshops, and provide resources to special interest groups. Faculty members also collaborate with partnership district teachers and administrators on mutually beneficial research.
