Steven Guberman is associate professor of educational psychology. His research interests focus on social and cultural processes in children’s learning and development. Recent projects have studied (a) how preschool children learn and use mathematics in parent-child interactions, (b) how school-aged children with little formal education (in Recife, Brazil) learn and use mathematics in everyday activities, (c) ethnic differences in children’s mathematical activities and achievements, and (d) the emergence and solution of mathematical problems in children’s play of educational and board games. He is currently studying the nature of science learning in informal educational settings by analyzing conversations between adults and children in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and conversations among school children in a science discovery center.

Dr. Guberman was chair of the Education Committee and a member of the board of directors of Collage Children’s Museum (Boulder, CO; 1998-2000). He has conducted evaluations of the Science Explorers Teacher Outreach and Development Program (Science from CU) and the Center for the Young Child (The Children’s Museum of Denver). Recent publications include Mathematical Problems and Goals in Children’s Play of an Educational Game (with G. Saxe), Cultural Aspects of Young Children’s Mathematics Knowledge, Project Math-Muse: Interactive Mathematics Exhibits for Young Children (with R. Flexer, A. Flexer, & C. Topping), and Supportive Environments for Cognitive Development: Illustrations from Children’s Mathematical Activities Outside of School. Dr. Guberman was a 1999 National Academy of Education Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow.
