Jeff Frykholm is associate professor of education specializing in mathematics education. Dr. Frykholm has pursued several threads in his scholarly work including: the integration of mathematics and science (with respect to both curricular design and pedagogical strategies); the impact of reform-based curricula and pedagogy on teachers’ beliefs, practices, and professional development; pre- and in-service teachers’ professional development; and teachers’ tolerance for discomfort and uncertainty in the reform-based classroom. As a former public school teacher, Dr. Frykholm’s teaching interests involve issues pertaining to K-12 mathematics education. In particular, Dr. Frykholm teaches methodology courses for prospective elementary teachers, mathematics content courses for practicing teachers, and various graduate level seminars that focus on aspects of mathematics teaching and learning.
Dr. Frykholm is a member of various professional organizations and continues to serve those organizations in various capacities. He was a member of the writing team for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Navigations series, serves on the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Committee for Technology in Mathematics Education, and was a member of the editorial board for the American Educational Research Journal. Dr. Frykholm received a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship for 1999–2001, and recently completed a NASA-funded, integrated research and development project entitled Earth Systems Connections. He is also a co-PI on a five-year Interagency Education Research Initiative (IERI)-funded project, Supporting the Transition from Arithmetic to Algebraic Reasoning (STAAR), that investigates the teaching and learning of algebra in the middle grades. He has recently received a Fulbright Fellowship to research and teach in Santiago, Chile, during the 2006 calendar year.
