Janette Klingner, PhD
Service
Janette Klingner’s service record includes significant contributions as a journal editor and member of several editorial boards, active participation and leadership in professional organizations, extensive mentoring, and participation in community activities (e.g., professional development workshops, involvement on task forces and committees).
Current editorial responsibilities include serving as an Associate Editor of the Journal ofLearningDisabilities (2005–present), and on the Editorial Boards of nine other journals (Bilingual Research Journal, Exceptional Children, Journal of Special Education, Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, International Multilingual Research Journal, Learning Disability Quarterly, Multiple Voices, Remedial and Special Education, and Theory Into Practice). Janette also serves as an occasional reviewer for several other journals. She was Co-Editor of the Review of Educational Research from 2002–2005.
Janette is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the Council for Learning Disabilities (CLD), the National Reading Conference (NRC), the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), the International Academy of Research in Learning Disabilities (IARLD) as a Fellow, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), and the International Reading Association (IRA). Current and past leadership positions include: for AERA, serving on the Early Career Award Committee, as the Chairperson of the Special Education Research Special Interest Group (SIG), Program Chairperson for the Special Education Research SIG, and member of the Editors Committee; for CEC, serving as Vice-President of the Division for Learning Disabilities, on the Evidence-based Practices Steering Committee, as Secretary, Chairperson of the Diversity Committee, and Chairperson of the Early Career Publication Award Committee for the Division for Research, and as Secretary for the Division for Diverse Exceptional Learners; for IARLD, serving as Vice-President for Members, a Conference Chairperson and local host, and Publications Chairperson; for IRA, serving as a member of the RTI Commission; and, for NRC, serving on the Multicultural Issues Standing Committee, the Technology Committee, and as a Field Council Representative for Colorado,
Janette is strongly committed to mentoring graduate students and junior colleagues. She is serving or has served as a mentor through: (a) Special Education Leaders for a Diverse Society (SELDS), University of Miami; (b) Collaborative Redesign for Effectiveness Across Teacher Education Linking (CREATE), Florida International University; (c) Academic Scholars with Educational Resources (LASER), University of South Florida; (d) the Center of Minority Research and Special Education (COMRISE), University of Virginia; (e) the Center for Minority Special Education, Hampton University; (f) Preparing Special Education Faculty for Universities and Colleges Project, University of Arizona, and (g) Preparing Leadership Personnel to Promote Research-Based Practices, Collaboration, and Success of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students with Disabilities, Utah State University.
Janette’s current or recent university service includes serving on the School of Education Salary Committee, the Professional Seminars Task Force, the REM Faculty Search Committee, the EECD Faculty Search Committee (as Chairperson), the BUENO Center Advisory Board, as an EPIC Center Fellow, and as a Co-Chairperson for the Division for Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity.
