Janette Klingner is a professor of education specializing in bilingual special education. She was a bilingual special education teacher for ten years before earning a PhD in reading and learning disabilities from the University of Miami. To date she has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles, books, and book chapters, and presented at numerous national and international conferences, frequently as a keynote speaker.
Research interests include reading comprehension strategy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students, Response to Intervention for English language learners, the disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education, and professional development that enhances teacher quality in diverse schools. She has been a co-author and Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on numerous federally funded grants. Currently, she is the PI on an i3 validation grant in partnership with Denver Public Schools and Padres Unidos, Collaborative Strategic Reading-Colorado (CSR-CO), a co-PI on two research projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), CSR for Struggling Adolescent Readers and the Literacy Learning Cohort Project. In addition, she is a co-PI for the BUENO Equity Assistance Center (Region VIII).
She is a member of several professional organizations in special education, bilingual education/TESOL, and literacy. Currently she is a Vice-President for two organizations: the International Academy for Research on Learning Disabilities and the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Learning Disabilities. She is the past Co-Editor of the Review of Educational Research, an Associate Editor for the Journal of Learning Disabilities, and on the editorial boards of 9 other journals. In 2004 she was honored with AERA’s Early Career Award.
