Brian Sevier is assistant professor of education in the instruction and
curriculum content areas program (ICCA). His primary instructional focus
and teaching responsibility is elementary social studies methods at both
the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Sevier’s research includes
the following: the critical analysis of the creation of curricular materials,
the process of becoming a teacher, and the impact of teacher gender on elementary
classroom experiences. His dissertation, articles, and conference presentations
have all looked at issues surrounding the creation of curricula and/or the
consideration of the ways in which teachers can utilize instructional practices
to facilitate the development of critical thinking skills in their students.
He has conducted ethnographic and historical research regarding the education
and experiences of male elementary teachers and the involvement of elementary
and middle school teachers in the creation of anti-racist/multicultural
textbooks, units, and other instructional materials.
Dr. Sevier is a member of numerous professional organizations in education
He was twice graduate student representative for Division F: Educational
History and Historiography for the American Educational Research Association
(AERA) and continues to be active in that division. In addition, Dr. Sevier
is also a member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS),
and the History of Education Society (HES).
