Barry Sloane received his PhD in Education from the Measurement, Evaluation and Statistical Analysis Program at the University of Chicago with special emphasis in mathematics education. He has taught at University of Chicago, the University of Illinois and Arizona State University. Prior to coming to Colorado –Boulder he worked in industry as a research statistician and in US government where he was a program director at the National Science Foundation. At the NSF he was affiliated with the Research on Learning in Education (ROLE) program and was program manager for the Interagency Education Research Initiative (IERI) and the TIMSS 2000 study.

His research focuses on the learning of mathematics, behavioral methodology and the modeling of student mathematical development in multilevel contexts. Most recently, his research has appeared in the Educational Researcher, Reading Research Quarterly, and Theory into Practice. He is currently the chair of the Hierarchical Linear Modeling SIG of AERA. He presented the 2006 keynote address at the NCTM research pre-session entitled: Unifying mathematics education research: Quantifying qualitative insight. He is presently serving as a methodological consultant in support of the World Bank’s educational efforts in South Africa with specific attention to “Closing the Skills and Technology Gaps in South Africa.”

His research has been funded by the Ball Foundation, the Campus Research Board at the University of Illinois, the Government of Ireland, the Joyce Foundation, the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.
