cy.Scan was organized in the summer of 1999 and is a chartered center of the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Margaret A. Eisenhart, an educational anthropologist, is the Director.

cy.Scan has six purposes:
  1. To provide scientific, technological and communications services to socio-economically underrepresented communities
  2. To conduct community-based research
  3. To help university researchers learn from community-based resources
  4. To collect and disseminate research on youth, culture and community-based knowledge
  5. To offer conferences on community-based qualitative research and
  6. To provide technical assistance as a way to offer opportunities for graduate students to conduct research.

cy.Scan has two staff members, the Director, Margaret A. Eisenhart, and the Interim Associate Director, Leslie D. Edwards. cy.Scan research is conducted by its "Fellows" and its mission is enacted and supported by its community Advisory Board.
