The studies reported in Women's Science looked at places where women scientists were surprisingly well represented. Women scientists in these sites enjoyed science, were enthusiastic about learning more science and were successful -- all of which are exceptions to the general body of research from the past 20 years which indicates that girls and women are underrepresented in the study and practice of science.
These sites shared a common pattern where science was organized and defined in ways that encouraged the women's participation in immediate, socially relevant and politically contingent activities or networks. |
