The Center for Youth in Science, Culture & New Media (cy.Scan)
Cy.Scan was organized as a chartered center of the School of Education of the University of Colorado at Boulder
in response to two events: (1) the role that peer groups played in the identities and actions of those involved in
the shootings at Columbine High School in April, 1999, and (2) an increased emphasis on the Boulder campus on diversifying
the student population. There are six main purposes of cy.Scan, involving research and community-based knowledge.
- To provide technical and educational services to socio-economically underrepresented communities in the areas of science, technology, and communications.
- To conduct community-based research which aims to make a radical and substantial impact toward educational practices to empower those currently underrepresented in mainstream United States socio-political, economic or cultural structures.
- To create opportunities for university-based researchers to study and learn from community-based ways of thinking about youth, culture, and the relevance and importance (to them) of burgeoning scientific knowledge, emerging technologies, and new forms of communication.
- To collect and disseminate state-of-the art research on youth, culture and community-based knowledge in ways and formats appropriate for a variety of audiences including parents community leaders, teachers, students and policy makers.
- To offer regular conferences or workshops on how to conduct community-based qualitative research.
- To provide technical research assistance which enables undergraduate and graduate students to gain experience conducting qualitative research projects. Projects in the Five Points neighborhood of downtown Denver include Literacy and Learning for Life and Simply the Best!
