Earth Systems Connection Earth Systems Connections (ESC) is a collaborative elementary curriculum project developed at Virginia Tech, the University of Colorado, and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Major funding is provided by NASA. The ESC curriculum provides K-5 teachers and students with a set of lessons designed to integrate science, mathematics, and technology in the context of exploring the earth as a system. The ESC curriculum engages students in hands-on investigations that utilize new and emerging technologies (e.g. computer-based tools including the internet). A main goal of ESC is to introduce primary children to the components of the earth system, with emphasis upon appreciating the strong interrelationships that exist within the system. In addition to the creation of integrated curriculum modules, the ESC project also has a significant research component, including investigations about: the impact of integrated mathematics and science experiences on both teachers and children; the use and potential of cultural contexts as motivating sites for learning mathematics and science; and the role that Traditional Ecological Knowledge might play within the bounds of traditional Western modern science perspectives and curricula.
