Simply the Best! Simply the Best! is an after-school program in science and technology for African-American and Latina middle-school girls in the Five Points community of downtown Denver. The program was developed in 1999 at the request of a Five Points community organizer who felt that young people in his community should have access to more academic resources. The faculty, with input from the community, designed a science and technology curriculum that would appeal to girls and that would incorporate science knowledge and technology skills that the girls could use to improve their performance in school and increase their chances of obtaining good jobs in the future. This program has been offered for five years and has provided services to approximately 60 girls and their families. From the start, data have been collected about the girls' interests outside the program, their responses to the program, their attitudes about science and technology, their working knowledge of science and technology, and their performance in school. In fall, 2001, we began systematic analysis of these data. This outreach and research program has been supported by the UCB Outreach Committee, the Woman's Foundation of Colorado, the Rose Community Foundation, the Denver Foundation, the Daniel's Fund, and the UCB School of Education.
