School of Education Event Photos Graduation- May 2009 May 7, 2009, marked the Graduation Recognition Ceremony that represented an enormous accomplishment for the School of Education’s students and faculty. The school celebrated 81 students who earned certification for teacher licensure, simultaneously completing the School of Education’s Teacher Education Program and their bachelor’s degree. In addition, 43 students, having already earned bachelor’s degrees, completed the Teacher Education Program; 21 earned a Master of Arts in Education degree with a Certificate (Master’s Plus); 143 earned the Master of Arts in Education degree; and three students earned their Doctor of Philosophy in Education degrees. Dean Lorrie Shepard welcomed the crowd for the ceremony at Macky Auditorium and introduced keynote speaker Michael Johnston, founder and principal of the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts in Thornton, CO. Johnston is considered a major thought leader in education and has advised President Obama on educational issues. He was recently voted in to take the seat of former Colorado state Senate President Peter Groff. Additional recognition went to the following recipients:
Congratulations to all and we are eager to hear of your future accomplishments! Take a Glimpse at Student Teaching — May 2009 CU-Boulder photographer Glenn Asakawa spent several hours with graduating senior Stephanie Bosco as she taught math and reading exercises to her 20 students at Rolling Hills Elementary School in Aurora, CO. Under the supervision of teacher Vicki Marshall, Bosco completed her student teaching and graduated in May. Bosco hopes to teach primary grades in a Colorado elementary school. Celebration of Teacher Inquiry — May 2009
An evening of learning and discussion unfolded at CU-Boulder’s University Memorial Center during the School of Education’s Celebration of Teacher Inquiry in May. Forty-five practicing teachers enrolled in master’s degree programs displayed highlights from their research projects and conversed with faculty and guests at poster sessions, panel presentations, and roundtable discussions. The event promoted teacher learning and celebrated the completion of the Capstone Project: the last class for master’s students in Curriculum & Instruction (C&I). For the first time, research begun by students starting their master’s degree in C&I was also included. Many of the 45 students at the event participate in a special program in the School of Education, Partners in Education (PIE), which is designed to support beginning teachers while they concurrently earn their master’s. The Celebration of Teacher Inquiry was coordinated by Debbie Hearty, director, School and University Partnerships; Sara McDonald, Special Events coordinator; Jennie Whitcomb, associate dean; and School of Education faculty Elizabeth Dutro and William McGinley. Class of '59 Luncheon — May 2009 The class of ‘59 was back on campus — this time for its 50-year reunion. School of Education reunion participants enjoyed lunch, hosted by Dean Lorrie Shepard, and listened as undergraduates discussed their teacher education programs and graduate students highlighted their research. Every year the school looks forward to welcoming back its graduates — so class of 1960, it’s your turn — we look forward to seeing you in May 2010! |
