Diversity

The School of Education has a strong commitment to diversity because the varied perspectives and experiences among diverse faculty, staff, and students enrich the learning community. Our definition of diversity includes gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and disabilities as well as racial, cultural, and ethnic identity.

We consider it essential that our programs prepare teachers and researchers for the increasing diversity of our communities and public schools. Program goals, curricula, and field-based experiences are designed to achieve this end. As part of their program, all teacher education students are therefore required to complete one or more of their clinical placements in a setting with a high proportion of students of color. At the master's level, the most popular electives among teacher licensure students are courses in multicultural curriculum and second language acquisition, and most courses infuse issues of multiculturalism with the specific subject area. There is also a clear substantive thread focusing on issues of social justice in the doctoral curriculum. For example, doctoral students participate as a cohort in a multiculturalism seminar with a service learning component and a core course on research and policy offers students the opportunity to examine education policy related to segregation, school reform, school choice and issues of race and class.

What does our commitment to diversity and social justice look like?

The BUENO Center for Multicultural Education has been part of the School of Education for 25 years. BUENO provides outreach to the entire state in teacher training, migrant education, adult literacy programs, and GED preparation. In the past 15 years, the BUENO Center has received more than 140 federal educational and training grants totaling more than $30 million.

The Education Diversity Program is a part of the University of Colorado's LEAD Alliance Neighborhood. Together, they provide students of color and first generation college students with a welcoming environment and a network of support services.

Other outreach and research projects focused on learning opportunities for minority students and second language learners include: Simply the Best! After-school Science and Technology Program for African American and Latina middle-school girls in the Five Points community of downtown Denver; Literacy and Learning for Life, also in Five Points, which involves adult mentors from the community along with preservice teachers from the School of Education in literacy instruction for children; and CREDE, a federally funded national Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence.

Faculty, staff, and students in the School of Education support the University of Colorado at Boulder Diversity and Equity Plan which includes the following commitments in its vision statement:

We envision a place where the pervasive respect for diversity has created a supportive climate in which students are able to reach their academic potential and the entire campus benefits from participation in a multicultural community. All members of the community, including underrepresented groups, enjoy a campus climate that is professionally and academically supportive, respectful, safe, and welcoming.
