Designing Your Own City

Officials in the city of Königsberg have decided to expand their city by developing land located on an island (called Kneiphof) owned by the city. The island lies in the middle of the River Pregel which runs through the middle of their town (see the map below). The city officials have decided to put to a committee the task of deciding what is to be built on the island, and how the construction is to take place.

The only requirements that the officials have placed on the new development is that it should have easy access to the rest of the city, and that the layout of the streets follow the style of the rest of the city. To ensure this, the officials have decided the development of the island must have the roads and bridges laid out according to their plans. Note that this means that not only must the construction include developing the island, but that it must also include the construction of five bridges which will link the island to the rest of the city.

As a project manager for a local development company, you have been selected to participate in the committee. As a member of the committee, you must help decide on a reasonable list of the ten most important necessary for completing the development of the island. After a list of the ten tasks is complete, the committee must decide on estimates of the time required to complete each of the tasks. This will allow project managers, such as yourself and others who will be bidding on the project, to gain an understanding of the magnitude of the work involved.

Once the committee has completed its list of tasks, you must return to your company and prepare a presentation to the officials of the city explaining why your company should be the one to do the work developing the new land. The committee has a large amount of funds, but is in a hurry to complete work on the island. Thus, they will be awarding the construction contract to the company which can guarantee that the work will be completed as soon as possible.

Prepare a presentation to the committee which completely details how you propose to complete the 10 required tasks. Keep in mind that although the officials are willing to spend quite a bit on the project, they are careful shoppers, and will only choose the company with the most convincing argument.
