Division of Real Property

Tom, Dick, and Harry have inherited a piece of property bordered on the north by Lily Lake and on the south by Rural Road. They don't want to sell the property since it has been in the family since the Civil War, so they have decided to divide it. Tom has been asked to draw two dotted lines perpendicular to the road on a map of the property, so land is divided into three parts, any one of which he would consider a fair third. Dick and Harry do the same on their maps; none of them see each other's division. Show that regardless of how the lines are situated, each person can be assigned a piece they cut so that there is no overlapping of the pieces. In fact, in most cases there will be "excess" land not assigned in the process.

b. Could one person end up with more than 1/3 of the land? If so, how, and which person?
