AFC WEST PRE-SEASON STANDINGS

As the 1996-1997 football season approaches all the teams and their fans have speculated both publicly and privately on their potential success. Our job today is to rank the teams in the AFC Western Division first individually, then come up with a ranking that represents the views of the class as a whole.

To begin, we will rank order the teams in the AFC West individually. A ranking of 1 means that you feel that particular team is the best in the league, a ranking of 5 means that you feel that particular team is the worst in the league. These are the teams in the AFC West (in alphabetical order).

____ Denver Broncos
____ Kansas City Chiefs
____ Oakland Raiders
____ San Diego Chargers
____ Seattle Seahawks

After ranking these teams, tally your individual results at the board. When everyone has tallied their individual rankings, copy the class rankings on a sheet of paper.

In groups of four, produce a ranking that represents the entire class. Be prepared to state your ranking and explain the method you used.

Extension:

Regroup yourselves by team preference. (All those who had Denver as their first choice group together, those who had Kansas City as their first choice group together, etc.) If your individual first choice was not the group choice for first, how could you change your individual votes to improve your team's standing. (E.g. If the class consensus was that "your" team was 3rd best in the AFC West, could you manipulate your individual votes to place "your" team in 2nd or 1st place? You may assume that all other votes remain the same.) If "your" team was group ranked in first place, how could a change in your voting insure that this ranking remains the same.
