Jill & John's Place

You are an employee at Mrs. Long's restaurant, Jill & John's Place. Since you spend a good deal of time in the kitchen each shift, the decision (or argument) about which radio station to play in the kitchen matters to you.

Mrs. Long has decided that in order to be fair to everyone, she would like to come up with a set schedule of stations to be played each day. She has listened in on the arguments enough to know that one of these five stations are picked almost without fail:
97.3 KBCO alternative rock
98.5 KYGO country
99.5 KKHK classic rock
104.3 KQKS top 40
106.7 KAZY hard rock/metal

Mrs. Long has come up with a plan that she feels will be fair to everyone. Starting with Monday, more people work each day as the week goes on, with everyone working at least once on either Saturday or Sunday.

As a group of employees, we are going to come up with a group ranking. The station ranked #1 will be played on Saturday and Sunday. The station ranked #2 will be played on Thursday and Friday. Station #3 on Wednesday, station #4 on Tuesday, and station #5 will be played on Monday.

1) Your first task is to come up with a personal ranking, with #1 being your first choice.
_____) 97.3 KBCO alternative rock
_____) 98.5 KYGO country
_____) 99.5 KKHK classic rock
_____) 104.3 KQKS top 40
_____) 106.7 KAZY hard rock/metal

2) Once you're finished, write your column of numbers on the board.

3) In your group of 4, come up with an employee ranking based on the total data. You may use any method that your group would like, but you must be prepared to defend your method and your final ranking.

4) Some questions to think about while still in your group:

5) Each group will present their ranking to the rest of the employees.

Is there one right answer?

6) The final task...

Find all other employees who voted for the same station that you did for first place. In this "first choice" group, try to come up with a strategy that you could use to make your choice actually become the winner if the whole class were to vote again. (Assume that you do know the results of this initial poll.) If your station was already the number 1 choice, how could you be assured of keeping it there?

Be prepared to present these strategies to the class.
