Dear New Member of the Class of 2019,
Congratulations on your acceptance to CU-Boulder. While at CU, you will have many opportunities to explore fields of study and career pathways. As Dean of the School of Education, I write to introduce you to opportunities at CU to study teaching, learning, and policy in school and community settings.
I want you to know what a special place the School of Education is. Our faculty are national leaders whose research inspires innovation in policy, schools, and youth programs. We pride ourselves on small classes taught by our distinguished faculty and by exemplary classroom practioners. Many of our classes also involve concurrent practicum experiences in local school and community-based organizations. Our mission is to prepare teachers, educators, and community leaders who have the commitment to make the world a better place and the skills to do so. The School of Education is a great place to explore a career in education and community engagement while also pursuing your academic major.
Orientation
During orientation, I invite you to attend the Pre-Education Orientation session. You’ll learn more about different pathways we offer:
- Becoming a Teacher: While at CU, you can complete a major in your college and also fulfill course and clinical experience requirements to earn a Colorado initial teaching license. Your advisor can help you plan the best core courses to begin this pathway. Learn more about our Teacher Licensure programs, including admissions and program requirements.
- Peace Corps, Community-Based Organizations, or Education Policy: If you want to work within a community-based or education policy organization, explore our Education Minor and newly established center, CU Engage.
Registering for Fall Classes
Early planning makes a difference. As you register for fall classes, let your advisor know you are interested in education and consider enrolling in EDUC 2020 or EDUC 2050. These 1-credit courses allow you to try out teaching. You’ll have hands-on experiences teaching in a local school.
